Learn to Crochet in a Day – How to make Granny Squares Project 1

Learn to Crochet in a Day!
How to make Granny Squares
This is a ‘beginners’ granny square. Later you will learn how to start a granny square using different techniques, but this is the easiest way to get in a lot of practice fast. Below are the directions. Read through them once or twice and see if you can understand the instructions. If not, don’t worry, you’ll figure it out soon enough.
NOTE: This project assumes that you know the basic Crochet Stitches. Don’t know all the stitches? Not problem, you can Learn to Crochet in a Day!
You will need:
Yarn: cheap stuff is good for practice projects.
Hook: 4.5mm or 5mm
ch = Chain
dc = Double Crochet
slst = Slip Stitch
NOTE:
The ch2 at the beginning of each row counts as the first double crochet.
Repeat what is between the **
Row 1: Ch4, join with slst to first ch to form ring. Ch2 (counts as first double crochet), in the ring 2dc. Ch2, *3dc, ch2.* Repeat ** twice. slst in top of ch2.
Row 2: Ch2, turn. 2 dc, ch2, work 3 dc in same sp, ch2. *Work 3dc, ch2, 3dc in next ch2 sp.* Repeat in other 2 corners. Join with slst to top of ch2.
Row 3: Ch2, turn. 2 dc, ch 2. In all corners: 3dc, ch2, 3dc, ch2.
In all, but the first, non-corners: 3dc, ch2. Join with slst to top of ch2.
If you would like to make a 4 or 5th row, just follow the directions for Row 3.
I have made an entire crochet blanket out of one giant granny square. Typically small granny squares are made and then sewn together later to make a large throw or blanket.
